Dreams Make Sense (or not)
By Karla Whitmore
I understand that dreams come from the subconscious mind, though the purpose of dreams is not always the same. I do believe in prophetic dreams, memories, and imaginative “mind movies” put together by the subconscious, but sometimes it can be difficult to see why I dream what I dream. The elements that come into my dreams make perfect sense in some cases and very little sense in others. For instance, I had a very strange dream last night and the only part of my dream I had been thinking about was the musical group I had been listening to prior to going to sleep. Three of the members of this band showed up at my doorstep – here in the middle of “nowhere”. They wanted to get away from it all for a few days and figured the country was the best place to do it. I spent hours (seemingly) showing them around the fields and woods and trying to explain to them what it meant to “chop wood and carry water”. At one point, the lead singer went to the door and exclaimed, “Look! Isn’t it adorable?” and promptly ran out the door to pet the “adorable” porcupine. Our family dog (dead for nearly 20 years now), put herself between him and the porcupine. I told him she had experience with porcupines and if he didn’t want to end up in the emergency room, he should come back inside. With that, the dog vanished and everyone was astounded. I shrugged. “Well, she has been dead for a long time!” I was hard pressed to find anything to cook for dinner and asked if they would like to go out to eat. They all agreed that fried chicken sounded delicious, and so we all hopped into my little Saturn and went into the closest “blink and miss it” town. The restaurant was owned by my best friend’s mother. She was delighted to see us and immediately sent the group into the bathroom to fix a plumbing issue. I laughed and told her they were musicians and not handyman kind of people. She smiled and said, “Well, I died in February and still make a mean fried chicken...” (In fact, she died on Valentine’s Day) I woke up. Where did I come up with all that from “Last Chance on the Stairway”? I’ll spare you my dream about buttheads terrorizing me. Yeah. The monsters literally had butts in place of their heads... or the recurring dream I had that my best friend had died and her skeleton was in my garage (I woke up crying every morning for a solid week). I once had a recurring dream that had an accompanying soundtrack. Though I’ve never been able to find the song through all my searching on the internet, I can hum the tune and sing the chorus from my dream. Unfortunately, I’m not a composer. For several years, I had flying dreams. I was always flying to get away from danger and sometimes ended up flying above the clouds. They were never enjoyable dreams, because no matter how high or far I flew, the predator was always inches away from catching me. Then, one night I dreamed that I was flying for the fun of it. I could feel and smell the night air. I ended up perched on a barn roof, looking out at the countryside. Since then, I have not dreamed of flying at all. Trauma I suffered as a child sometimes crops up in my dreams and I wake up screaming and thrashing around. Thankfully, I don’t remember all of the dreams, because the ones I do remember I wish I could forget. Sometimes I am able to identify a dream as a dream and have fun with it. Other times, I am able to control my fears because of the awareness that I am dreaming. Still, there are other dreams where all of my senses seem to kick in and I don’t have a clue that I am dreaming until I wake up. I’m curious about others’ dreams. Does anyone out there have recurring dreams or fantastical nonsense kinds of dreams? Have you ever had your dreams analyzed?

Whatever you do NEVER GET YOUR DREAMS ANALYSED! If you have difficulty in understanding your dreams with the intimate knowledge of yourself that you have, how on earth is some 'read a book or two' expert going to do any better? As a child I remember day-dreams in which I could leap down from great heights without getting hurt but I could never leap up. I have been told by a dream consultant that these day-dreams have charted my progress through life and created a self fulfilling prophecy. Effectively he was saying that my ill health was self generated and, for a while, I believed him! Fortunately I grew up with a very healthy dose of cynicism thanks to his dangerously destructive interpretation. Dreams are a way for your sub-conscious mind to sift and sort facts. In a way, they operate in the same way as a disk defragmenter, bringing scattered sections together for easier reference.
I have weird dreams too. I agree with Arthur's last paragraph. I heard the same thing from... somewhere...
Thank you for sharing this detailed and very interesting story, Karla. When I awaken, I can't remember my dreams enough to discribe them. That's a good thing, I think. Best wishes. Frederick
