Food: Eating to Live

By Karla Whitmore

Something that has always bothered me about the idea of eating to live rather than living to eat is that it implies that food is not for enjoyment but meant only to provide sustenance. For me, that is akin to saying that sex is not for enjoyment, but meant only for procreation.

Of course, “living to eat” speaks volumes on its own. Gluttony is never attractive.

I know the phrase is about amounts rather than taste, but eating to live healthfully is NOT about taste either, and while there are healthy foods and combinations of foods that do not taste bad, who in their right minds or taste buds would prefer an apple to a scrumptious dessert?

In the interest of weight loss or maintenance, sure an apple is far better tasting than a stick of celery, but in the interest of satisfying a sweet tooth, even a juicy Macintosh (my favorite) falls short. Now, put that apple in a pie and top it with vanilla ice cream and we’ll talk.

I have a bone to pick with the creator. Healthy eating would be much easier if healthy food tasted like chocolate, barbecued ribs, ice cream, or supremely–topped pizza.

Healthy eating? If it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger.

Food is one of those items that we all enjoy to a greater or lesser degree but the by-product of food is a necessary evil that we would probably all be better off without.

Food is for pleasure as well as fueling the motor - it is also one of those things which other people will preach at you about because, in their opinion, you are doing it all wrong.

If a little of what you fancy does you good, enjoy it.

After all, when did they ever bring someone back and show them how much longer they are living because of the cellery they are now eating?

:) I actually do eat fairly healthy. Sometimes I just resent it. I eat a lot more apples than pies and probably a lot more celery than chocolate. I'm just complaining.

I'm one of those miserable dieters, too.

Hi, Didn't realize those apple McIntosh thingies are edible before. Real organic computing?

Reg,

*tee hee* I am sure someone out there has had a similar thought at some point and was actually serious!

I agree it would be great if healthy food was as delicious as the unhealthy stuff.

Well, I do like low-fat yogurt. *sigh* The "Boston Cream Pie" flavor isn't the same, though...

Boy, it's hard for me to comment constructively on this one.. But basically, my feelings are the same as yours. It's just GOTTA taste good. Taste great is even better...

Ever had "low-fat" lasagna? *Making faces*

"Low fat" lasagna? Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww..... What's the point?

EXACTLY.

Remember, you can have the apple pie, Karla. You just have to exercise three times as much, as when you had the apple.
Forget alamode!!!
Thanks for sharing.
Best to you.

Technically, I would need to exercise SIX times longer to work off the amount of calories in an average slice of pie (w/o the ice cream) than I would if I ate an apple. I actually like to exercise, but since I don't have that kind of time, I'll deal with the deprivation. *sigh* I usually do. :)

Hey, I had a market stall with my late wife. I spent time examining content for a variety of conditions. I reckon it has to be possible to create healthy tasty meals for any diet. Takes quite a bit of research though.
