Home Remedies for Chest Congestion
By Karla Whitmore
Home Remedies for Chest Congestion When you have a severe cold or the flu, you end up feeling fatigued, achy and generally just plain yucky, but when chest congestion adds insult to injury, a “simple” bug can keep you and your entire household up at night. The harsh cough that comes along with it all makes it difficult to go to work or school without causing a distraction and the fact of the matter is chest congestion can be painful! There are over-the-counter medicines available that help to loosen mucous, but when you have it bad, there is more you can do to clear your chest and start feeling better sooner. Tomato Juice and Cayenne Pepper I read about this remedy in a fiction book years ago and had to try it out. It really does work! Pour 8 ounces of tomato or vegetable juice into a glass; add 1/8 of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and stir. Take a couple of big swallows and then sip at the rest for the next hour or two. Honey and Lemon The lemon “cuts” mucous and the honey coats the throat, soothing it and reducing coughing. Simple recipe: 16 ounces of hot water, 1/8 cup of concentrated lemon juice, 1 – 2 tablespoons of honey. Stir together in a glass and sip until gone. Traditional Chicken Soup PLUS Heat up a can of chicken soup or make your own and then add chopped fresh garlic and black pepper to your bowl. Eat two or three bowls of chicken soup a day until you feel better or get “sick” of soup. Fried Onion Poultice I was prone to bronchitis when I was a kid. My mom made many fried onion poultices for me. It really works! Easy Preparation: Cut up two large onions; fry in a little bit of oil or butter; pat the oil off with a paper towel; place the warm, cooked onions inside a cloth towel and place directly on the chest. After half an hour or so, take it off and then take a nice, hot shower. The shower does two things: helps clear your lungs even more and gets the onion smell off your chest. Caution If you feel pain on breathing in or out, run a constant fever, or do not start feeling better within a couple of days, see your doctor. Pneumonia or bronchitis could be the problem. While the above remedies can help the symptoms, they do not cure lung infections.

great job
I can vouch for several of the remedies mentioned, but the tomato juice + cayenne pepper one is new to me. Thanks for the tip!

It isn't to everybody's liking, but it does work. I tend to think it has to do with it being spicy... (always good for head or chest congestion). Add fluids and vitamins, and hey, it makes a good healing cocktail. :)
