Prayer and Meditation
By Karla Whitmore
I had an argument with a friend today over prayer and meditation. It wasn’t a heated argument; it was really more of a discussion. He believes prayer and meditation are the same, while I stand by the statement that prayer is talking to God and meditation is listening. Please note that when I refer to “God”, I refer to God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But the theory works for those who view God differently. Name a religion that has a god and you will find the followers do talk, and they do listen, and though both terms are said in varying languages, the meanings are the same: prayer and meditation. Those who do not believe in God may tell you that meditation is quieting the mind or go so far as to insist that it is “listening to the higher self”. For Christians, the higher “self” is not the “self” at all; it is God – a separate entity that dwells within us as well as without us. In my mind, the definitions still stand. One cannot truly listen when one is talking and meditation was developed as a means of quieting the mind. Have you ever noticed that when you stop interacting and start observing, all of a sudden you really notice? It is the same with the voice of God. I cannot speak for everyone out there but I know that I probably spend more time praying than I do meditating. How frustrating that must be to God. He has to hear us whine, beg for help, question His very existence… and then we don’t stop to hear Him answer us. We just go on with our day until it suits us to talk to Him again. Granted, we don’t always whine. Still, I am guessing that most of us keep the conversation very one-sided. God loves to listen to His children. I am sure He loves it when His children listen to Him. Does this mean that if you are quiet for a few minutes, you will physically hear a voice? I don’t know how God may speak to you. Maybe you will hear a voice. Maybe the voice will be God -- or maybe the voice will mean you need medication. :) With all kidding aside, I truly believe prayer and meditation deserve equal time and I for one am going to work at striking a balance.

Thank you for sharing this thought provoking story, Karla. I think most people would agree with you. Even with two ears, we only listen half the time! Best wishes. Frederick
